Oakland Visitor Information

Plan your trip to the beautiful San Francisco Bay area in sunny California by flying into Oakland International Airport. From there, you can visit some of the best attractions in Oakland, such as the zoo, the museum, or some wonderful outdoor activities that will give you a lovely taste of what Oakland is all about.

Oakland International Airport

The Oakland International Airport flies to cities in the U.S., Mexico, and Europe. Both Southwest Airlines and Allegiant Airlines treat Oakland as a small hub. Downtown is approximately 10 miles north of Oakland International.

Oakland Museum of California

Learn all things California at the Oakland Museum of California. The building's architecture is gorgeous, and the museum focuses on art, natural science, and history centered in California. View California art from the 1800s to the present day, and study California's history from well before Europeans came to the Americas.

Redwood Regional Park

Visit the biggest stand of coast redwoods in the East Bay area at Redwood Regional Park. More than 40 miles of trails run through the scenery, giving you ample walking, biking, and jogging opportunities. You can also book a picnic area for a wonderful afternoon meal outdoors.

Oakland Zoo

Oakland Zoo

The Oakland Zoo opened in 1922, and it keeps its animals in habitats as close to natural as possible. The elephant exhibit is especially breathtaking, but every animal enclosure at this zoo is a delight to behold. The Zoo is 6 miles from the airport, but it takes about 20 minutes between the two.

Lake Merritt

This lagoon is a little east of downtown Oakland, and it has been a wildlife refuge since 1870. It's also nationally registered as a Historic Place. Visit the shore, or take a romantic gondola ride through the waters. If you have time to kill between flying in and getting to your hotel, hop in your Alamo rental car and take the 10-mile drive to Lake Merritt.

Fox Theatre

The Fox Theatre has an interesting history. It opened in 1928, but closed in the 1960s and didn't reopen again until 2009. Thankfully, the restored theater is still a gorgeous example of Art Deco architecture. They do all kinds of shows there, and half the fun is enjoying the venue!

Your Oakland adventure awaits you, and these attractions will be some of your trip's highlights. The temperature in Oakland is pretty consistent year-round, so the outdoor exhibits are great to visit at any time of year.
